Had the opportunity to finally visit this museum in Toledo, Ohio on our way back from our kids wedding in Pittsburgh, PA. For reference, Toledo is about a 1.5 hour drive (in good traffic) from my house, but of course...have to cross the border. Unfortunately, it was mid April and the 2 ships (one old lake freighter, and 1 tug) were not yet open for the season to tour - makes an excuse to go back again.
Out front of the museum (as shown in one of the following pics) there is a huge propeller from the John Sherwin, which is currently in long term layup (since 2009) on display out front. Inside the museum are many wonderful displays and some interactive exhibits showcasing the regions great lakes shipping history. Toledo used to be a shipbuilding port as well, and there are some highlights of that was well. Also.....there are many amazing models on display, many of them built by Detroit area modeller Sam Buchanan.
Also included is a section about the history of the rum running times that my city (Windsor) was a major player in - there wasn't any alcohol prohibition here in Canada.
Enjoy the pics from our tour of the museum!
