I recently bought a marine painting which is in terrible shape. Before I have it restored I thought it wise to photograph it and ask you all if you can help me identify the ship, the painter and action thinking the restoration might obscure the facts. My best guess from my own research is that the vessel depicted is a Dutch 20 gun frigate built in the late 18th century engaged in a fight with an unknown. The ship appears to be firing a rolling broadside from stem to stern. The painter's initials are ER and appear in the lower right-hand corner. I have been unable to identify a Dutch or English painter with those initials. When first painted, it must have been a masterpiece. Any help would be appreciated.

I have no idea. But my first thought was the VOC ship Amsterdam. The replica lies in Amsterdam. But there are to much difference to the replica and you painting.

good hint, but

signed with "ER", but I guess it is a different painter,m because the signature and also the style of painting

BTW it is hard to define a certain ship shown on the painting - here not a lot of details are shown and it looks slightly abstract
somehow a frigate with around 24 guns......

You did not show a photo of the backside...... sometimes there are any additional information given, marked, stamped etc.
