Many of us have to make masts from hand from strips of wood. Luckily I have a lathe. But for those who do not, this trick using broken sabre saw blades is one way. It's the sort of simple old world technique that typically comes from Russian craftsman, but this one comes from Argentina, and is truly clever. Forget planing!

Making dowels

This is clever, thank you for posting it. Now I'm thinking to myself "how can I modify this to TAPER the dowel?"
You can not, unless you can control the vertical height of the blade and link it to the control that feeds the dowel horizontally, since movement of both must be simultaneous. All you need to taper dowels once they are round is a means to spin the dowel between centers and two sanding blocks.
