Hello all!

I’m a 64 year old/young man that has tinkered a bit with wood working and model airplane building throughout my life but I have never built a ship model.

About 30 years ago I visited a picture framing shop in my home town and right besides the door was a unbuilt wooden ship kit that the store owner wanted to sell. He had bought it quite a long time before that and was unsure that all the parts were there or not.

Anyhow I ended up buying the kit for a modest amount and it has just been sitting on a shelf in my home since then,

But yesterday I finally opened the box and went through the content and I can say for certain that it is indeed missing some parts. None of the metal parts that were supposed to be included are there, missing is also a number of ribs (at least that is what I think they are called).

Guess I could try to assemble what I have and from that try to reconstruct the missing parts :)

The model is made in West Germany by Steingraeber and is called the Satanis.

Cheers from the Artics, -22 C is forecasted for tomorrow so I guess it will be a good day to spend on the kit ;)

Welcome to SoS! Looks like you have a challenge ahead of you, but one that can be overcome with determination.

Welcome to the forums !
If you have the board that the missing "ribs" are from, you can use that for a template to make replacements, if it doesn't show them to you in the plans.
Thanks!

No that board is missing all together, one of those parts was cut out of that board but the rest of it is missing.

And the plans show only where they are to be placed on keel, I also suspect that parts of the documentation is missing…

Anyhoo, will be a bit of a challenge I guess :)

Welcome aboard! Well I hope you at least have a great set of plans/instructions. Maybe able to purchase replacement parts but scale will be important.
I think the actual building instructions are missing, I have only found a sheet with the principal design and a second one with the pattern for the sails…

It will be a challenge ;)

Welcome. That will be an interesting project and the finished ship looks great. I hope you will start a build log and keep us posted.

Well…. Since this is my first build and the kit is missing lots of parts I am bit reluctant to do a build log, but maybe it could serve as an example on how *not* to build a ship model ;)

I might even do some kit bashing, it might even wind up as an old motor yacht look alike :) Or more as a sailing yacht with a simplified rig, still gaff rigged though. As I mentioned, I am missing lots of parts and some of the wood for the masts are badly warped…

Cheerio!

It's your call, but there are a lot of very good scratch builders on here who could offer good advice if needed. Either way, good luck!

Welcome to the SOS Group. Since this is your first wooden model ship, and from what I read on this post I would recommend you start with one of the great instructional kits and shelf this project for the time being. With so many missing / damaged parts and lack of instructional sheets or drawings you could be starting on a very disappointing task.

Yes I concur, but I will have a go at this - I have so many other hobbies (hunting, fishing, dogs, classic cars, motorcycles, camping, rafting, etc.) so there is a chance that this will be the first and only ship model I have a go at :)

Welcome from a new ship builder as well...
What I found with the Endurance I finished is you really enter into a relationship with the build. If you want to increase the chance of completion, and even with instructions / all the parts, there were times I wanted to throw the thing against the wall. Figuratively speaking : ) I would agree with Fourseas and get a kit you really would like to build / spend some time with. Good Luck either way! : )

That sounded Awful Friends.
Intentions were to say it is difficult even with all you need.
Truly you will spend a lot of time on this to do it well.
Apologies for the poor choice of words.
