Hi all

My name is Tony and I’ve just rekindled my interest in wooden ships. I’ve been retired for 3 years so time is not an issue. I’ve been making plastic models since I was a kid, from the simple Airfix stuff in the 60’s , to the highly technical modern kits. I usually model tanks and WWII aircraft, but have always liked the idea of taking in a sailed warship. I stared one many years ago, but did not have the time back then. Luckily, I still have the tools, but the model was given away.

I am thinking of getting the HMS Snake, I think that is a Caldercraft kit. Any alternative suggestions would be gratefully received.

I used to be a software engineer, so like the idea of using Arduino or Raspberry pi to do some automation. Maybe something like turning on cabin/deck lights when it gets dark.

Anyway, hi to you all and keep on modelling

Tony

Hallo Tony and a warm welcome here on board of our forum.

Great that you came back to our hobby of modeling and also that you found our forum - we will try to help and assist you in your first steps in wooden ship models

The sloop HMS Snake is not the easiest model, but highly interesting and the kit is of very good quality - f.e. the kit has also some copper sheating of the hull

We highly recommen, that you start with your build also a building log, so we can comment and assist and answer questions or give hints for the next working steps...

But most important is to have fun in working on the model - I wish you a lot of fun

Thanks so much for your reply. Re the Snake, is there another warship that you would recommend as a starting point?

If you want to stay with Caldercraft / Jotika ...... and I recommend it, because of good quality kits especially in the begining
Maybe a model with only one or two masts - so you reduce the rigging works

In the beginning it will be important to get used to some modeling techniques, especially in the beginning with ths planking of the hull and deck (and later the rigging)
Also good sometimes is to build a model of a bigger scale

Maybe not spectacular, but interesting - the 1:32 model of the gunboat William, where you can learn all the techniques, find the fun in a good result and make a 3-master later on.......

but also the Chatham is a good starter..... (my second model) - my first model was a cheap spanish kit -> a big disaster)

Thanks for the info. I think I will go for the William. I remember I was terrified of the rigging on the last model I had and this seems simpler.
