Trying this new hobby for the first time
I will be attempting the OcCre Endurance 1/70 Scale as my first build so have been checking online for useful tips
Enjoying your site , so thanks for accepting me
I am now retired so I won’t be rushing to learn these new skills

Ambitious first build.
First of all, WELCOME to SoS!!!
Second, I totally agree with Quint. There are other kits that will teach you good practices a little at a time so when you get to a more complicated kit, you will be better prepared. One of the best starter series are the three kits originally designed by David Antscherl and available from:

Hi Rob,
As everyone says, WELCOME, you will find they are all very helpful people from all around the world. I have been a member since Dec 2024 and have received loads of help.
I am new to this and chose Occre’s Polaris as my first build, the instructions are not bad along with their videos on YouTube.
An ambitious first build for you but you may have some of the skills already. I did not, so made lots of mistakes which I shared with the folks on here. They were very helpful and I received good advice. Parts of my first planking had to be removed and redone. That worked and I progressed to the second planking.
You will be like me and buy many new tools for this hobby.
I am now in the later stages of my build and am very pleased with it. But as the folks on here have said to me you will make mistakes but that will help you avoid the same pitfalls again.
The hardest thing is the plank bending, which you will get better with the more you do.
But be patient and don’t rush.
Feel free to message me if you need to.
Enjoy

Oh, forgot to say. Keep a photo record of every stage of your build. It will be interesting to see your progress, but even if you don’t post it, you will still have a photo record

Hi Dennis
Thanks for the advice
I am already thinking that the hull will be the hardest part of the build, but I’m interested around the history of this ship and want a new challenge rather than build another plastic kit version.
What can possibly go wrong
I won’t be starting it for a while, but when I do I’m sure I will be asking for help.
Rob

Sorry folks I guess emoji don’t come out in this text , it was a crying face, I’ll know in future

Good to see you here. I smiled at your comment "the hull will be the hardest part of the build".

it will - just as long and you're busy with the hull,
Then the masts and spars will be the hardest part - get the sizes right, the way the diameter alters - then the standing rigging - that gets hard too.

And when you've done all that you may find the hardest part is the running rigging - all those lines to lead and wee blocks to make work and look right.

Oh heck - like any new venture, the hardest part is at the front - wherever you are working with things you haven't done before.

The saving grace is that there are a shipload of boatwrights on this list, and any questions you might want to ask, for a bit of reassurance, will get dozens of answers. (helpful ones!)

Thanks Jim

Hello Rob and welcome aboard. I built the Endurance as my second build. Occre has a series of 70 videos detailing the construction of the Endurance. I found them to be very helpful throughout the build.

Welcome aboard, SoS, Rob! As is the case, if one arrives a little late in welcoming new members, great advice has been offered, and sincerely so.

Welcome Rob. I like your reference to "what can possibly go wrong" ROTF It instantly made me think of Murphy's Law.

Murphy's Law, often stated as "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong," is a humorous observation about the tendency for things to malfunction or go awry. Here are some common variations and related ideas:

Core Principles of Murphy's Law:
  • Anything that can go wrong will go wrong: This is the most widely known and basic version.
  • Everything takes longer than you think: Tasks and projects often take more time and effort than initially anticipated.
  • If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong: This highlights the tendency for the worst possible outcome to occur.
  • If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway: This emphasizes the unexpected nature of Murphy's Law, even when things seem foolproof.
