I’m new to both this community and to model ship building. I’m looking for suggestions on a project that everyone would recommend for a beginner as well as tools needed.

Thank you so much, it doesn’t get any better than free. I will definitely be doing this.

the biggest problem with beginners they pick complicated kits and end up getting frustrated. As for tool you do not need much to start with. The Model Expo series all you need are a few hand tools.
if you go with the Dory you will find build logs right here so first check them out

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum and also to our common hobby

Hoy mate, welcome aboard. May I recommend a plastic model sailing ship, a simple one. You need to introduce yourself to glues and paints. Sanding parts smooth and test fitting them. Don't worry about any wood kits for now, dont worry about bending nailing and /or gluing wood together. Learn the parts of a sailing ship and some rigging. Go to a real Hobby store, a hole in the wall type shop. Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Walmart sell some plastic models but the employees know nothing about them. Go to a Hobby shop that sells RC Boats, Cars, Trucks and Aircraft. They also sell PLASTIC model ships. They know how to build models, they know what glues you will need and a good selection of paint.
Keep it simple and small. Dont let all the parts discourage you. Follow the instructions to the letter.
This will sound strange but, if you are completely new to modeling .... believe it or not, I would highly recommend putting a couple of plastic WW2 aircraft together first. One wing, no rigging! That will introduce you to sanding, glueing and some painting techniques. Introduce yourself to working with the simplest plastic model and if you want something more, then find a plastic model of a sailing ship and advance.
We do this because it is relaxing, it is time travel, it is history. Dont be in any hurry and please keep us posted mate. Your asking questions and that's always good. "A wise man learns from another man's mistakes. A average man learns from his own mistakes and a fool never learns."

Model shipbuilding is a wide, wide world. Ship models range in time from ancient Mediterranean watercraft to modern warships. Today, the vast majority of models are built from kits that tend to favor relatively few subjects with marketing appeal; Nelson era warships, Spanish Galleons, clipper ships.

I suggest that you also immerse yourself in books to learn about maritime history. By doing so you might find some subjects that you would like to model once you have gained confidence with beginner kits.

It's like sneakers: Just do it. The famous boat builder and designer Pete Culler said "Experience starts coming the moment you begin, and not one jot before." And have fun!
