This is a model of the ABBAS, an 1880s era side-wheeler that features in the epic film Khartoum. The boat was used to ferry European and Egyptian citizens from Khartoum, which was encircled by Mahdist forces. My version is shorter than the original shown in the film, but is very close to the original in terms of style and overall structure. There are no plans or photos of the original historical boat, so all I had to work with were blurry screenshots from the film version. I was committed to using leftover wood and materials from previous projects and for the most part I was successful, but did have to buy some sheeting, some LEDs and a few other items. I also ordered a 3D model of a Nordenfelt gun (an early type of machine gun) and will also hopefully obtain some soldiers, as the boat made its escape from Khartoum loaded with guns and cannons to protect it against attack. I also posted a build log for those who are interested.

Nice job on the ABBAS! I admire you for taking on a scratch-built project. Unfortunately since my surgery in April 2023 I have not had the wherewithal to attempt another boat/ship project. I do miss it!

Thanks Don. It's good to hear from you. I just sent you a private message via the Conversation function.

Follow up on my build. I added some Sudan War era toy soldiers to make the boat resemble the one in the film (first screenshot, below). My alterations included adding some scrap lumber and various armaments, including a cannon and a Nordenfeld gun. My boat is now ready to run the gauntlet of the Mahdist Army!!

Your ABBAS has become a real man-o-war! I assume the scrap lumber is to protect the soldiers, et al. from gunfire. Nice job!
Thanks Don. Yes it was there to protect people from the Mahdists' gunfire. However, the actual history records that the Abbas was overwhelmed by the enemy while trying to get downriver and there were no survivors.
You're missing the Charlton Heston figurine to make it complete.
True, but Charlton Heston wasn't on this particular trip. His second in command was. But it would still be nice to have the Charlton Heston figurine!!

It’s a good thing he wasn’t on that trip as his second in command lost his finger on that trip. And his life. Loved that movie and by the way great model.
