Since joining this forum 10 years ago I have read many posts from members wanting to buy a certain model but “how do I sneak it past the admiral?” Is a constant subject.
I too was in that group. Then:
Woke up this morning and bravely announced that I was going to purchase a new model.
That was it. No barking, no biting. I thought she would at least growl a bit. Nope. Only comment was “where are you going to put this one?”
There you go fellas. Piece of cake.
Give her the news!

Whatever I want usually costs me twice as much. First, I just have to surprise the Admiral with a Lego set she's been wanting, then how can she say no?

Still have the "Where are you going to put it?" issue, but it now applies to both of us.

Ah yes, the Admiral. Mine spends a small fortune feeding wild birds. When she asks “ how much was that ?” I usually respond with a not to bad if you break the cost down to an hour of build time. As far as where to put my boat once finished….. well. I was feeling a lil saucey one day, told her once she moves her Chrystal stuff in our TV room it’ll look good on the shelf.

I was told by the Admiral... "no new kits for Christmas, you already have 4 waiting to be built". So I asked for a new book...L'Eygptiene by Ancre.Fe at 1/48 in English. Some how I feel I have won.

The other thing I do (and enjoy doing) to relax, is cook. As a result, I have an over abundance of kitchen gadgets and appliances. So my Admiral has responses that sound very similar to your discussion... I've not been told that I can't purchase more kitchen toys, but I have been told that I need to show her where I plan to store it. In other words, where will you find room to keep it. She's a good woman, as she's provided me with new challenges and forces me to become more inventive in my solutions to said quest. lol

I can relate as I do 95% of the cooking. It's not that the Admiral is a bad cook, but she retired from 46 years of teaching 4 and 5 year-olds. As you all (should) know, a teacher's job doesn't end when the dismissal bell rings, and for the best teachers, that's when their day actually begins - much of it done at home. So, the cooking just naturally fell to me, as she worked on lesson plans and preparations for the following day. I enjoy cooking and just kept up with the task even after her retirement.

Here's the funny thing though - it is still her kitchen! Things must be arranged the way she likes it. Oh well, I guess that is what being the Admiral is all about - and yes, I still love her!

Display space is a real problem. Admiral or not. Models stored unbuilt in the box not so much.

my wife has issues (medical) that affect her memory. and no i dont take advantage of this (not often anyway ) i can tell her something or we can have a conversation then a couple of hours later we have the same conversation again.
if i really want something then i just go and get it and when she discovers it i just say i told her about it a couple of months ago.

Well, there is always wall space and half models. I'm looking into a method for masts and rigging without cutting all the spars in half. (great for fore and afters) As for full rigs, some homes with volume ceilings have pot shelves across the top of the wall. The admiral's hairdresser has has told her husband, "no tracks or trains" but hasn't denied him non rigged models. Our church had a replica pulpit, and a shrimp boat hanging from the ridge in the sanctuary. There's always a way.

So.... been married for an eternity. The Admiral will say 33 years. No complaints, no regrets and we get along great..... still.....
a marriage is 50/50 so she says ( more like 60/40 and not in my favorite)
Now Riddle me this......
WHY do we spend so much time and energy making sure THEY'RE happy ?
Happy wife, happy blah blah blah.
Quiet time can be productive build time.

By the way, I do keep a blanket in my truck......

My Captain has run the ship for 54 years. She can go off like Mount Vesuvius, which is why I will tease her, just to watch the show, after diving into my foxhole with my tin helmet on.
The only thing I fear is when she shows up where I do models with a vacuum cleaner in her hands!

When you are surprised by such a resigned comment, it can often indicate that after however long it took, she's finally reached the end of her rope and realizes she cannot change you no matter what she does. This is when things can get really crazy. At that point, there's no telling what she might do. When they fight, it's because they still believe there's something worth fighting for. When there isn't, that's when they can get deadly. It works both ways, too. Doesn't matter if it's a husband or a wife.
