He comenzado un nuevo proyecto.

http://www.bibliotecavirtualdeandalucia.es/catalogo/es/consulta/registro.cmd?id=1021555

I have started a new project.
It is the Royal Galley of D. Juan de Austria in the Battle of Lepanto.
A few years ago I did the decoration of a model that reproduces the life-size recreation of this existing gallery in Barcelona (Spain). He did that work in collaboration with the modeler Máximo Agudo Mangas.
On this occasion, it is about re-making a recreation of said gallery on different bases. The project is also a collaborative project of four modellers, of which I am responsible for the float and the decoration, the aesthetic program of the model.
This project starts from a research work. The galley of Barcelona, the 1: 1 size, was built in the 1970s. It's worthwhile work, but research over the past 50 years has revealed some inaccuracies. That is why in this model we start from scratch, studying contemporary documents, those close to the time and studies that have appeared in recent years.
The project is sponsored by the Naval Museum of Madrid and facing the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto.
As I said, I will stick to my part which is the float and the decoration. The study of shapes and planes of the hull, - buco - and structures has been prepared by the modeler and naval engineer Luis Fariña.
Regarding the decoration, a very important part of this ship, I will use a main and exceptional source from the 16th century, it is the Description of the Royal Galley of the Sermo. Mr. D. Juan de Austria, by Juan de Mallara ,.
In this link it can be consulted, in its facsimile version of 1876:
Another important work is the painting of The Vision of San Pio V, existing in the Naval Museum of Madrid, which dates from the seventeenth century, later although close to the battle, so it is a pictorial source very close to the facts and that can be used of important aesthetic orientation.

The first step is the construction of the carriage, the noble part that served as the Prince's accommodation and as a council room.
The first step is to build a riding arena in order to seat the model on it during construction. It is very important to calculate the sheer angle, very steep in this case.
It should be mentioned that, although the model will be assembled in the Museum workshop, for obvious needs this part is being built in my workshop, so coordination is important.
The sheer angle is 16º and the basic structure is built in pau marfim.

Prior to all this, there has been a study of the work of Juan de Mallara and on it I made some approximate sketches of what the decoration would be.
Said design will then be modified as it becomes reality and is required by construction.

Hallo my friend Ramon,
I am very happy, that you decided to share with us your new project - it will be once more very interesting.
A Galley with all these decorations will be a real challenge - I am looking forward to see your build

This design is different from that of the Barcelona gallery. Juan de Mallara's treatise makes a detailed description regarding the exterior of the main body of the galley. According to Mallara, the exterior of the gallery is divided into "terms" and "pictures", each one with "letters". The terms go with sculptures, the pictures with paintings, the letters are epigrams in Latin of classical authors. The paintings and sculptures are allegorical of the epigrams.

Both my design and that of the Barcelona gallery respect this composition, but in a different way:

La galera de Barcelona is very inspired by a design from a 1620 drawing of a galley of the Diputación de Barcelona; This drawing is collected by Gervasio de Artiñano in a very interesting work on Spanish shipbuilding, but currently difficult to access (it can be obtained online at the Smithsonian).

On the contrary, my design is inspired by the painting of Saint Pio V. The design of Barcelona is more "flat", while mine is more manieriesta, announcing the baroque, emphasizing more the difference between terms and paintings and accentuating the chiaroscuro, giving more mobility to the facade.

This is the drawing of the Diputación de Barcelona, in front of the painting of San Pio V

The galley float has a very pronounced sheer, 16 degrees. It begins with a basic structure that will give it body and, first of all, I am dedicated to the exterior decoration of the central body.

Always following the guide of the 16th century work of Juan de Mallara and the iconography of the painting Saint Pius V, the sides of the main body of the float are divided into "terms" and "paintings", the terms would have sculpture; the pictures, paintings.
I am building "modules" that will later constitute the side once joined

We are distributing the space between the terms and the pictures, seeking a game of shapes and chiaroscuro. Niches alternated with columns. Friezes and pediments. It is about playing with space, lights and shadows, with classical motifs, trying to find a Renaissance / Mannerist aspect, somewhat in the style of Palladio in his Olympic Theater (saving the differences).
Of course all these pieces, in these photos, are loose and loose.

For the design, I am marrying the elements described in Juan de Mallara's work with the design of the painting of San Pio V. With respect to this painting, it is not absolutely contemporary with the galley, it is a few years later; However, everything indicates that the author could have accessed a description of the gallery very close to reality. In fact, the arrangement of the decorative elements agrees a lot with Mallara's description. In other aspects, inaccuracies and artistic licenses are seen. That is why it is necessary to make a cohesion work between both works, giving, in case of discrepancy, priority to Mallara, which is the primary and most reliable source.

This project has a lot of decoration of sculptures, reliefs and paintings. I think it is one of the most complex models possible to decorate. For the sculptures and reliefs I use my usual method, a mixture of wood and baked polymer clay, modeled and carved.

The stern is distributed in a similar scheme, terms (where sculpted figures of the Virtues will go) and pictures (where paintings from the mythological cycle of Jason and the Argonauts will go), also space for cartouches for epigrams.

With regard to the galley, clarify that it is at 1:40 scale. It is a large scale, which makes decoration difficult, as the "carroza" is really small. However, despite this the model as a whole will have more than 155 cm. The galley is one of the most complicated models of "locating"; a galley on a scale of less than 1:50 is practically a model that requires a museum or a very large space.

A curious aspect of the decoration of the galley, is its total lack of Christian religious motifs and themes. Interestingly, the Battle of Lepanto is a symbol of the struggle between Christianity and Islam and it would be expected that the flagship of D. John of Austria, brother of Philip II, would be a display of Christian and Catholic symbology. This does not happen, Trento had not yet imposed and the decoration is rabidly Renaissance, entirely of mythological theme without, practically, any reference to Catholicism or Christianity.

As I said, the stetic program of the main body of the "carriage", is articulated in "terms" and in "alternate" tables. In some will go sculptures and in the other paintings. The motifs of the ecultures, paintings and epigrams are fully detailed in the work of Juan de MallaraIMG_20210202_090115.jpg

The upper floor to the ledge is the so-called "lattice". I leave it ready on the sides alternate heraldic motifs of the kingdoms of Castile and León. At the stern I open skylights to access where the "living" part of the Garden of Hesperides will be to which I will refer later.IMG_20210202_185013.jpgIMG_20210202_185200.jpgIMG_20210203_083154.jpg
