I’ve been there and it’s certainly worth a visit! Every year in October the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers holds its annual convention. In conjunction with this, the Naval Architecture Department of the University of Michigan has a dinner for its alumni. One year Michigan’s dinner was held at the New York Yacht Club with the Cocktail Hour in the model room. We had some customers near NYC so I scheduled some sales calls with them and attended the alumni dinner at the Yacht Club. As might be expected the models are limited to yachts; no Victories or Constitutions. There is an entire wall of half models with rigged models in cases on the floor. Of course many of the models are of boats owned by members so are well over 100 years old.
A more accessible venue for those interested in yachts is the Herreshoff museum in Bristol RI, not too far from NYC (by Minnesota standards). This includes the America’s Cup Hall of Fame with a very nice collection of America’s Cup yachts. I haven’t been there since they began racing the ugly, by my opinion, hydrofoils.
