Would it be easier to mount the backstay before or after mounting the yards?

To me it is easier to mount backstays first and all pre-rigged yards after. This works most of the time with some exceptions.

I agree, it is usually alright to follow the order of dressing as was done on the ships themselves. From James Lees' The Masting and Rigging of English Ships of War page 158.
