OCCRE White Wood Putty Question

Hello All,

I am building Santisima Trinidad kit from Occre, I purchased the white wood putty they have, however trying to filld small gaps in Sapele hull, not sure how you match the Sapele color using a white wood putty, anybody has used it before and share some experience?

Most likely, you’ll need a stain that closely matches Sapele to cover the white putty. The real question, however, is whether OcCre’s putty is stainable at all. I’d recommend finding a Sapele-toned stain and testing it on a scrap piece of wood first to see how well it blends, both with the wood and the putty. Alternatively, you can use Elme's putty, it is a great product and stainable.

I don’t use any putty to fill in gaps between the planks. If gap is noticeable I pull planks out and do the job again. My inner quality standards maybe are too high.

You can try filling the gaps with same sapele wood though. This might look not noticeable after painting.

Selling high priced accessories is an old marketing trick employed by sellers to increase the profit of a sale. Occre does not have an R&D department formulating new and unique wood fillers. Chances are that things that you need to build this model can be sourced locally.

If you plan to continue building ship models and I hope that you do, it pays to keep some consumable materials “in stock”. I have a can of Durham’s “Rock Hard” Water Putty on my shelf. This comes in powder form so shelf life is not a concern. It mixes with water. A can will allow you to build models of both fleets that fought at Trafalgar. This putty dries to a very light yellow/tan consistency.

I also have a can of brown poster paint powder on my shelf. The stuff that kindergarten teachers use, or used to use. This is great for coloring glues and puttys. I have used it with epoxy, PVA glue, and Durham’s putty. It does not affect adhesion or curing.

Fixing mistakes and doing things correctly do not make your standards too high.

Take a piece of scrap wood and sand it down and save the sawdust. Mix the sawdust in with the filling medium (I often use white glue because it dries clear) to make a paste and use that to fill the gap.

As always, try it on some scrap first to test.
