Today I spent time in my shop refurbishing a pair of miniature metal snips that I bought approximately 50 years ago from Model Shipways when they were located in New Jersey and sold model kits in yellow boxes. The snips had been used to the point that they would no longer cut light gauge sheet brass. Disassembly, removal of some rust, and time with a sharpening stone put them back into service. While doing this I thought about how much I enjoy using these old tools. To me they are old friends; always there when I need them.

So! Do any of you have old tools to which you have an emotional attachment. Not the new gizmo but that old tools among that you rely on when you need it?

If so, let’s hear about it.

All of my large hand tools (scorps, drawknives, planes, etc.) are over 100 years old. They feel right, they take and keep an edge, and most were either bought cheaply at flea markets or handed down from my grandfather. My gouges are only about 50 years old but still "old school" high quality. They are English and I can put a mirror finish on the edge with a leather strop and rouge.
