Hi ALL HAVE SOME PADUCK THAT I AM USING FOR A MODEL WHEN I SAND IT THE DUST IS HORRIFIC, DO IT OUTSIDE WITH A MASK, STILL A LOT OF DUST AFTER I AM FINISHED WITH THE KEEL THAT I AM DOING WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SEAL IT AS I AM GOING TO USE TUNG OIL AND WIP_E ON POLY SHOULD I DO IT NOW , OR WAIT. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE Don

Hi Don
Depends if you have a lot of further gluing to do to the piece. What is it for?I would use Tung oil but not Poly,it makes the timber too dark as I have found it to my own expense.I would stick to Tung oil wax or shellac with this timber so you don't destroy the colour.

Kind Regards

Nigel

Hi Nigel THANKS IT IS THE KEEL SECTION OF THE M/S ARMED LONG BOAT (THE GOOD ONE) REPLACING MOST OF THE STRIP WOOD FROM THE KIT AS I USUALLY DO WITH M/S KITS, I AM GLAD I POSTED BEFORE I DID ANY THING, YOU ARE SAYING JUST USE THE TUNG OIL THE ONLY THING THAT HAS TO BE GLUED TO IT IS THE FALSE KEEL, WILL POST SOME PICTURES TOMORROW UNDER MY BUILDING LOG FOR THE ARMED LONG BOAT, ALSO HOW DO I CLEAN MY PERMA GRIT TOOLS I HAVE WIRE BRUSHED IT BUT THERE IS STILL SOME DUST ON THERE AFRAID IF I USE IT ON BEECH OR SOME OTHER WOOD THE SANDING DUST WILL TRANSFER. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE Don

Don,if you want to retain the red hue to the timber,do not use Poly,it kills it.Tung oil is good on it's own without anything else.A couple of thinned coats 50% using white spirit and a couple of neat coats is sufficient.Any more and you start to build gloss which I assume you don't want.I would oil once assembled.
Paduak is like a red Ebony, both in how it works and how much mess it makes. The difference is the dust is not oily so doesn't stain everything.A couple of rubs on some scrap softwood is enough to remove the dust from you tools.I would not use the same sandpaper between timber types though.

Kind Regards

Nigel
