Patination / distressing

i get that not everyone likes the look, and that's perfectly fine, but some people that have the need to go out of their way to explain to me how cannons cannot in any way be rusty.

iron cannons do infact rust so someone needs to go actually look at one. If it a bronze gun then yes i doubt it would rust but an iron cannon does infact rust. It might take 100s of years but in time as we know rust never sleeps.

Just like the years. They keep marching on with no way of stopping them.

....but an iron cannon does infact rust.
Correct, it's only logical that cast iron would rust over time.
Perhaps the cannons did not rust on active ships due to use. Having said that: many of Spain's navy ships never saw any action in their lifetime- however there must have been regular firing exercises performed to keep the crews less 'rusty'.

Weathering is definitely an art form in modeling. I have tried some in the past on smaller boats...can’t say I was always happy with the results. My Dad was into HO trains...he did a lot of weathering. You can get a lot of weathering supplies, tools, and tips from train hobby web sites. Train enthusiasts do a lot more with weathering than model ship enthusiasts. What they do with trains is totally transferable to ships! I did learn that less is more...don’t over do it...be subtle...

Dear jimmystratos
Think working with aluminum is preferable because of the relative softness
your doing excellent work, and achieving butiful results Thumbsup :)

Does any body add wear & tear or ageing effects to their models? All photos I see of models are in a prisitine, clean presentation, unlike the real thing with staining, wear, rust, verdegris etc. I got to thinking about this after reading the threads on staining sailcloth for realism.
Hi,
I'm not a huge fan of distressing models to the point of looking like they will fall to pieces with a strong aft wind, but at the same time I don't care for the pristine look. One of the things that I don't care for is the bright shiny appearance of a coppered hull that looks like a brand new penny.
I've found some satisfaction in finding a happy medium of treating the hull and some of the ship above the water lines, less so.

Just my personal preference.

Hi Jimmy, I do not like much the models as if they were launched “yesterday” or on the contrary “ghost ships”. I think virtue is in the middle. Ships in good condition but used.
In my Nepomuceno I used several techniques like dry brushing, waterings, wood inks and brushing with alcohol.
I hope it will help
Greetings
Jaime
