Dear all,
I’m building the Pequod, having modified Occre’s Essex. Now I’m building the yards and I would like to ask you about them, if I must realize them similar to the Cutty Sark’s or Charles Morgan’s (with metal hold to the mast and yokes) or if it could be a great mistake realize them similar to the ones depicted in “Rigging of period ship”, by Petersson, with rope truss and wood parrels.
As you probably remember, the novel take place more or less in 1830 but the ship is old.
Thank you for your suggestion!

Older rope parrels or newer metal goosenecks? An interesting question. It seems that this transition in gear took place around the time that the fictional Pequod was built and sailed after whales. Things to think about in making your decision include:
  • an estimate of when and where the Pequod was built
  • the likelihood of a whale ship being fitted with metal gear at that time and place
  • the likelihood of metal gear being added between then and 1830 (remember that sailing ships were subject to constant maintenance and upgrading)
  • which type of gear you think will look best
I don't think that you would be wrong whatever you choose. Please keep us informed of your progress. Fair winds!
