Hello from Denver, Colorado! I’ll apologize right up front for the very long intro. I’m a rookie although I have been lurking and reading build logs and postings for 6 or 8 months, or so. The build logs are simply an incredible source of help and encouragement!
I bought my first (wood) ship model in 1984 (Swift Pilot Boat, Model Shipyards) when I graduated from college and moved to Michigan thinking the long Winters would be ideal for it. I grew up building lots of plastic models which included a Cutty Sark, and a Constitution although mostly aircraft. I had a great love of old sailing vessels though, and thought modeling with wood would be great fun. Unfortunately, the book that came with the Swift kit was not much help and the internet was far in the future. I put the model away, but not before also purchasing and starting the Model Shipyard Scottish Maid, completely amazed at how beautiful she was. You’ll see that I am bad about getting ahead of myself with kits! Fast forward to late 2023 when I found the local ship builders group (Rocky Mountain Shipwrights) which re-kindled my zeal for wooden ship models although I had never really lost it. Between the group’s encouragement, build logs on the web, and Bob Hunts Swift practicum I resumed, and completed the Swift and dug back into the Scottish Maid. Both efforts had issues but I kept going using the Swift as a learning opportunity knowing it would not be perfect. I had high hopes of the Maid being a much higher caliber build but now realize my skill level does not match my desired outcome! I’m over that – I’ve finally learned to be patient, do research on building methods and apply them the best that I can. Each kit is an education. The next effort, once the Maid is done is the Pride of Baltimore II with the help of Bob’s practicum and other build logs.
Well, the Rocky Mountain Shipwrights group had a sale of kits they had acquired and I picked up enough kits to last the rest of my life (Pride of Baltimore II, Flying Fish, and the Constitution), not that that has stopped me from oogling more! I’m looking for an entry-lever POF kit and noticed glennb17’s Hayling Hoy kit build from Modelship Dockyard. Would this be a suitable first time POF kit to try? Should I wait until after the POB II?
If you made it this far - Thanks for your patience, and any advice you care to share!
Cheers,
Terry
