I’m curious if anyone is aware of a kit of brig Pilgrim featured in Richard Dana’s book Two Years Before the Mast.

Howard Chapelle would classify Pilgrim as a “model that should not be built.” She was an ordinary merchant brig of her time picking up cargos where she found them. She was probably built in a small shipyard with hull lines lofted from a half model carved by the yard’s master shipwright. When the lofting process was finished the model was probably tossed in the stove to heat the shipyard office.

If her dimensions or tonnage is somewhere recorded you would be looking for information to build a similar sized American built merchant brig of approximately the same size.

I remember a Model Shipways kit of the handsome merchant brigantine Newsboy. That vessel probably was similar to the Pioneer although she was newer by 20 or 30 years, was rigged as a brigantine, and probably had finer lines, as she was described as having a clipper bow. Note that rigs on two-masted vessels were sometimes changed among brigs, brigantines, and snows.Fair winds!

A bit like our “de scheepsjongens van Bontekoe”, with the ship being a standard East Indian Comoany vessel.
