SYNOPSIS:

This monograph presents the gabare; a transport vessel used by the Navy to supply the dockyards, squadrons at sea and the colonies. The first gabares appeared around 1715. They were used for the transport of masting and framing timbers. Originally small vessels of 40 to 130 tons, their size will increase; up to 480 tons by the beginning of the 19th century and these vessels were fitted and laid out according to their use as they had diverse functions.

Fortuitously a gabare will participate in the Kerguelen expedition in 1772. She was adequately named Le Gros Ventre. She will eventually be abandoned by Kerguelen and sailing alone under the command of M. de St Allouarn, she will discover the west coast of Australia in March of 1772. The ownership of this land was written in the name of the King, placed in glass bottles and buried at the location of this landing. In 1998, the bottles were unearthed, which provoked great interest for Le Gros Ventre and her commander M. de St Allouarn. This would be a determining factor in the choice of this gabare as a subject since her draughts are preserved in Vincennes at the Service Historique de la Marine.

In consequence of the excellent work by Gerard Delacroix, the French Naval Archeology Collection is greatly enriched with this monograph; an original work treating of this type of vessel.

The presentation follows the usual format :
Blue hard cover, 24 x 31 format under full jacket representing an original illustration by Jean Bellis.

A 132 page (on 120g paper) book, square back, glue and sewn.
Numerous illustrations including 29 captioned photos showing the model built by Vincent Davenas.

Hi again Uwe, now that this monograph is also available in scale 1 - 36, do you know what the measurements are in this scale, height-width-length.
I could not find this on Ancre's website, may be a relevant project in the future with a larger workshop and more practice in this way of building models.
Regards Knut-

Hallo Knut,

there is now revised table at the ancre page only the original measures of the 1:48 model

Unbenannt.JPG

But easy to recalculate - see the following table:

Unbenannt1.JPG

The hull would be 117 cm and fully rigged apr. 150cm

It would be a very interesting project, especially in this bigger scale - and you know maybe, that our friend and member @Gilles Korent is a specialist in this planset and model......

Thanks for your help UWE, what I think about this ship and scale is that, scale, makes it a little easier to work with and that there is not very much carving work, the work with Rattlesnake 1-46 gives me reasonably good experience, and then I think it will be easier with a larger scale, but, this dream will come true far in the future, greetings Knut-

Does anybody bought these plans?
I received mine today and I figured out, that plans 5, 6 and 7 are combined into 2 plans: 5 & 6-1, 6-2 & 7.
It seems, that the paper is too small, so some of the frames are cropped at the top. This is the case for both planes.
Frames 2 to 4 and 35 to 42.

Printing the frames on three instead of only 2 plans would make more sense.

Does anybody observe the same issue?

This is GD's answer:
It's a problem that must have occurred at the printer's, because on the file given to Ancre, the frame is complete.
It's not too serious, as all you have to do is lengthen the lines a little. It's about 2 or 3 mm.

Like you wrote correctly, at the top of the frames it will not make so much problem
Which scale are your drawings?
Looking at my 1:48 set, everything is fine....

Hello Uwe,

The 1:48 and 1:36 plan sets are fine. This issue happened for the 1:24 plan set.

For some reason they decided to combine the 3 plans with the frames (5, 6 and 7) into 2 plans:
- Plan 5 and half of plan 6
- Plan 7 and the other half of plan 6
So you get two very very large sheets of paper with three rows of frames at scale 1:24. And unfortunately on both sheets the top rows are slightly cropped.
For me it would have made more sense to just enlarge plans 5, 6 and 7 on 3 sheets. Handling and making copies is just a nightmare, especially for the frames in the middle row.

To be complete, in the 1:24 plan set most of the plans were combined onto single sheets. So you get 18 very large sheets of paper instead of 29.
I asked GD in his forum for the reason. I'll add it here as soon as I get his response.

Here are the details for the 18 sheets in the 1:24 plan set:
PL. 1 & 3
PL. 2 & 11 & 26-1
PL. 4 & 10
PL. 5 & 6.1
PL. 6.2 & 7
PL. 8 & 17
PL. 9
PL. 12 & 20
PL. 13 & 21
PL. 14 & 22
PL. 15 & 23
PL. 16 & 26-2
PL. 18,
PL. 19
PL. 24 & 25
PL. 27
PL. 28
PL. 29
