With the price of everything else going up in price so dramatically, how do we anticipate the cost of our hobby. Myself, I'm on a limited budget. Price of lumber in the US is up 4x what it was pre pandemic.

I am a lucky guy!
I'm currently building the Coureur and still have an old, almost finished kit for restoration and completion. This will keep me busy for some time with my slow building pace.
Should the price level remain so high, I still have a few plastic model kits stashed waiting to be built.
And I am on the list for the Alert and hope the price will not rise too much.

Check out eBay. I got the Pride of Baltimore II that I'm building for about $65. People buy kits, save them for "someday" then fine something they like better.

Yep...Several years ago I started selling off my collection and can say I made a few dollars. I'll never make a dent in the remainder of my collection by building them that's for sure...and I truly hate selling the ones I have...lol...I'm especially fond of the old Sterling and Scientific kits that are on the shelf

As a group we should post more of our unwanted kits for sale here in SoS…perhaps selling for good value but not necessarily top dollar?? Hedge against the ever increasing costs of the hobby??

A new form in Ship kits would be a welcome addition. This could be an excellent means for a significant other to dispose of a spouses "toys". After passing of course:mad:

Yes the price of wood is crazy. Even when you search around for scratch wood you have to pay.

I fully agree with you, Stephan, and it is not just the wood, though. The tools to process the wood and fabricate the parts are also expensive (good tools)! Alternatively, you can scratch build from cardboard and get very good results, This method doesn't require lots of tools but and can be adapted as well but...it is a matter of personal taste and preference. ;)

The price of wood rised worldwide extremly, caused by the extreme needs of the construction industry. (Mainly USA and China is buying wood worldwide)
I am by myself Civil Engineer and I know very well the problems we have to get timber
But this lumber is the cheaper quality which is usable for construction business.

The prices for wood we need usually for modeling was not changing so much - so there is no price rising for modeling use caused by timber (in general).

Maybe you can realize, that some prices for kits are raising, but this is caused sometimes in the decision of the manufacturer, which kind of wood they include in their new kit releases - so they use f.e. pear or cherry now, 10 years ago the manufacturer put Sapele inside. Now some new kits are POF and not only POB (which needs less and cheaper wood)
So often it is a subjective feeling, that the prices are rising - we have also to take into account what we get inside the kit - really comparing apples with apples

and BTW: I am counting the costs per hour modeling - and this will stay cheaper compared to 95% of other hobbies

Я виню Covid и ограничения в увеличении производительности моделистов.
Да, время на любимое хобби явно увеличилось. И это хорошо. Работая удаленно из дома, я не трачу 1,5-2 часа по дороге с работы домой.

Yes, the time for your favorite hobby has clearly increased. And this is good. Working remotely from home, I do not spend 1.5-2 hours on the way home from work.
