I've been researching America's Cup "Puritan", looking at hull plans. photographs and built ship models. I've come across a puzzlement when looking at two photos of this particular vessel and I was wondering if anyone can enlighten me. First, is a starboard view found on, sloop-puritan.blogspot.com, which seems to conform with most models. Second, is a portside view found on, mitmuseum.mit.edu/collections/object/CF-24-044, which shows a coaming constructed aft which surrounds the binnacle and trails back to the steering gear housing. Was this construction present before the America's Cup race or built at a later date? Have not seen anything like it on any models and dates on these photos are not shown so chronology is missing.
