Hello everyone, I'm starting my first navy board model ( the Sussex) 1/48 scale I was wondering approx how much wood I would need to do the frames & if I should buy oversized & resaw, it seems like it makes sense to resaw & probably cheaper. Thanks

Hello, Bird. If you have a shop to process the wood, the large slabs would be your best bet. You can resaw them to billets of the required thickness and size.

As for the quantity, it is not an easy task to suggest. It will all depend on the frame types and their construction methods. If you have an ability or someone who can use CAD programs, they can help you layout the frame parts on the given size of the billet. Do you have plans for the frame parts? You can work with a sample frame to know the idea of how much wood you may need for all frames.

Yes I have the plans & book, I have the means to resaw , I kind of thought that would be best , as far as wood goes I'll need a lot, I'll always be able to use it, thanks for your reply & have a great night

When you're doing your figuring remember the well over half of the wood becomes sawdust when you are making small stuff. It surprised me how few planks I got out of a piece of wood and I was using a .040" thick blade for the last cuts. I think the framing is even worse because there is so much waste when cutting curves.
