I'm looking at several POF kits guys. I'm going with a kit because of the time savings and to work within those limitations so I chose simpler ships.

I have in mind.

CAF Le Coureur

Modelship Dockyard Hayling Hoy

Miniature Arts Port Jackson Schooner.

Le Coureur and the Hoy have extensive information available on them for the modeler which is a bug plus. All great looking ships.

I've been mulling it over. I've looked at all the logs. My main concern is quality of parts and especially clear detailed instructions in English. From what I've seen the quality is there but the instructions are quite important.

Your thoughts gentlemen ?? . Thanks

I am wrestling with exactly the same question and do not yet have the answer. A good build log to refer to trumps any instructions for any build and is a great bonus. In the end I will go with my 'gut feel' and that has never let me down.

The price is very high, but have you looked at the Syren Model Company Speedwell?

If you go with the Hayling Hoy, be sure to invest in the book at SeaWatch by David Antscherl on this vessel.

Allan, do we want to invest in the book for Speedwell, if we will go that route?

My few cents, buying the book is unnecessary, the kit isn't designed based on the book, and may/or may not complicate the build. This is an excellent book and will be a good companion for a scratch-build, but for the kit (unless you want to bash it) I do not see it useful, IMHO

Hayling hoy , kit has ice wood info not so great , block, and rope better buy after market that what I did on my build to save aggravation

I just looked at it, and the first 3 chapters are out of stock. That can always be a problem with a subscription model - usually all chapters are not available to begin with, and you always worry about some not being available when you need them.

The Model Shipways Emma C Berry is an impressive kit, though my not be the type of boat you're looking to build. The MS catalogue says it's plank on bulkhead but it's actually plank on frame. The MS website gives a free download of the instruction manual. The model in 1:32 scale single plank and is on sale for $127.49

Model Shipways Philadelphia. Current price about $180.00

This is a true plank on frame model, although flat bottom and hard chine. The planks on the boat’s side would have to be spilled.

As you probably know, the actual vessel actually exists in the Smithsonian Institution and very detailed plans taken from the real vessel exist at a modest cost to supplement the ones in the kit.

The Campaign that Philadelphia fought in stretched throughout most of 1776 and 1777, ending with the decisive battle of Saratoga. There are a number of of excellent books to help you maintain interest during the build.

BTW, this is one of the few models that you can build where left unpainted is realistic.

IMHO, many of the less expensive POB kits build models that look like toys. The Philadelphia kit builds a real historic sailing vessel.

yes looks great. I want something that will challenge me as much as my Blandford section did but I don't want to scratch it. Not a huge Ship of the Line but a interesting project. I'm not set 100% on POF given what's available but I'll likely go that route. I have to be very interested in the ship and there needs to be a lot of ref's available or I won't put the effort in. It may go to someone when finished and we're not sure on the type yet. Looking at many options.

This is in my sights too. Big model. Might not be practical.

I would set my eyes on what I want and not bother about price. If you are happy with the box and the ship in general then go for it.
Can I say something about scratch building? In basic general terms, in my opinion just trying to understand follow the plans is difficult much less trying to build a POF from just 2D drawings. And let me say that I even have a college degree in drafting and design. That just means that in general naval architecture is an art (drafting) within itself.

Instructions are not a strong point with the Hayling Hoy but the manufacturer is very responsive and there are a lot of build logs for this kit
