Hi All, What is the rack for on the deck of French tuna boats, eg Marie Jeanne

Hi Dr Syn!

There were many French fishing boats which fished off the USA coasts and had very long sailing times. There, the fish came in barrels, as with the Newfoundland schooners. On shorter trips off the home coast and with very large fish, it looks like this:

Thanks all, it was just that on the Marie Jeanne the slats seem very close together, like maybe they didn't hang the tuna from them but laid them out. Thanks

Another question on the marie jeanne. Did boats of that era carry liferings, I saw a picture of it with one on the mizzen shrouds but every other picture has none.
Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick!

Contemporary photographs do not show life rings on tuna boats. But in a blueprint of the "Marie Jeanne" of the AAMM (Association des Amis du Musée National de la Marine) from Paris, the life rings are shown. Anyone using this blueprint will recreate these life rings. Whether correct or not I cannot judge, because these plans are drawn by specialists.

Best regards
Thomas
