I'm requesting help with setting up my ratlines correctly. Specifically, do ratlines run parallel with the waterline, or with the planksheer?

I'm ready to start attaching the ratlines, but I'd like to get them right and after making several templates I prefer one run over the other - and I probably like the wrong one...

In the image above you can see that I've made two parallel black marker lines that are even with the planksheer. The other lines on the cardboard template (paper) run parallel with the waterline. When I use a ladder I want the steps to be level, but a rope ladder (ratline) wouldn't be nearly as critical (in my humble opinion). What say yee Masters?

Thank you for any guidance you may provide.

Your thoughtful approach is to be applauded. I think you're probably right about the importance of a solid rung on ladder being horizontal vs. a flexible ratline; however, I'm guessing that sailors would very much like ratlines to be horizontal even though (or perhaps because) the orientation changes as a vessel pitches. This looks like an example of the need to think about the practical aspects of building, rigging, and sailing wind-powered vessels. Fair winds!
