The Royal Louis was a 106-gun (110 guns from 1786) ship of the line of the French Royal Navy. She was designed and built at Brest Dockyard by Léon-Michel Guignace.
She was renamed Républicain in September 1792. Under this name, she took part in the Third Battle of Ushant, being the last ship of the French rear. She was attacked, totally dismasted, and struck her colours; however, the British failed to capture her, and she returned to Rochefort.
On 24 December 1794, she took part in the Croisière du Grand Hiver. As the fleet exited Brest harbour, she ran aground with the loss of 10 men. Her crew abandoned ship, and the wreck was destroyed in a tempest a few days later.

I was not able to find a lot of documentation about the ship
The model at the Muse de la marine is the 1759 version

Building the frame went like a breeze

I install the gun support to have an idea 1-1

Forming the bow 1-2

The planking of the stern on a small form 1-3

The deck at the stern gun emplacement done very little instruction for the correct positioning 1-4 a bit of guest work there

Did the deck planking from the bow and from the stern by doing that I give myself some problem as when the 2 haft connect on the center the plank kind of break the pattern 3-4, 3-5

Some discussion occurred some time ago that manufacturer rarely build there deck and included a deck curve Mamoli did put a nice one 4-2

Continued to build the stern structure 4-3

The RL from Mamoli will have a see true of the third deck from the stern 4-4, 4-5 when finish

Building the Poop deck at the stern
The see true from the stern is clearly visible the ship wheel is visible 5-1, 5-2



To build the bulwarks on the stern I took the measurement on the 1:1 drawing and trace a line to make the curve and cut the support 5-3, 5-4

Planking of the hull installing the gun port first time I do a frame gun port like that and not certain if I am happy or not about it 6-1 to 6-4

The bow well the curve of it is strong and an accented curve as to be make

Symmetry as to be achieved so I made the port side made myself a gauge and reproduce the curve on the starboard side 6-5 to 6-12

First layer of hull planking
The ship is huge 7-1
Because the ship is huge it went well. Except for the bow the got nasty curve the rest went well 7-2 to 7-4


Did some wood filling to correct defect 7-5, 7,6

The second layer of hull planking
I like my hull to have a more realistic look it might be a mistake but I plank it like deck with a ration of 50/50 8-1, 8-2

I did install the wale 8-3 Then did a red wash on them 8-4 follow by a semi gloss protective top coat 8-5

Completing the installation of the cap rail and all the deck planking the capstan and the davit 9-1, 9-2

The kitchen and kitchen chimney 9-3

Paint in blue (acrylic cobalt blue from Americana) some of the upper part of the ship as per some ship that I saw in Paris at the Naval museum 9-4 to 9-6

The kit do not required the planking of the ram part so I did it 10-1, 10-2

That is follow by building the part that go behind the plank that join the hull and the ram
On 10-3 it is the A done with 2x2 left over from my scrap box build a rought form sand it to size and install it on the hull 10-4 to 10-6


This is follow by installing the gold decoration and the grating or the bow platform 10-3 B
I use manly left over wood of the same size I have accumulate quite a stock over the year 10-7 to 10-10

Rear castle construction instructions are basic no more 12-1

The parts supplied 12-2 are made of very rigid metal without much possibility of adjustment

A light plywood is used for the lower part of the 12-3 form and a window imitation for the upper part 12-4 makes a 12-5 installation test and the result is not famous



Taken a 12-6 plastic package and redone the windows the difference 12-8



Temporarily placed the 2 back pieces and the one on the 12-9 side

Finish 12-10, 12-11 and 12-12



Not very happy at all by the result but it is an acceptable result. The metal being too rigid and leaving only room for little adjustment and break if I try to bend them for adjustment

Very rigid white metal 14-1

First problem 14-2 improper molding of making a balustrade post

5 of the 6 stairs complete with the steps that were provided in insufficient quantity painted the whole as well as the 14-3, 14.4 deck railing


The 6th staircase is missing half of a piece and repair it 14-5 @ 14-7

17-3 uses a small 0.5mm nail and makes a small line at 4.8mm
17-4 I use in 0.5mm lead wire
17-5 makes a loop that gives me a ring

May 29, 2018 the ship temporarily wrapped up and set aside the time of the construction of the France and finish the Mississippi
