Dear ship modelers,
I’d like to present my new ship plan — a nef from Sandwich, which was part of the Cinque Ports Confederation.
In medieval England, this alliance was a significant military and economic force.
The foundation for my reconstruction is the historical seal of the town of Sandwich.
Since detailed information about this type of vessel is limited, I relied on the works of Werner Zimmermann, Jochen von Fircks, and Werner Dammann.
Additionally, I incorporated ideas from my earlier project — the nef from Winchelsea — where I had developed two different hull and frame layouts.
To ensure the second version wouldn’t be forgotten, I decided to use it as a basis for this new design: the nef from Sandwich.
While my reconstruction doesn’t claim historical accuracy, it aims to capture the spirit of the period.
I’ve also included elements inspired by archaeological findings.
The complete plan consists of four DIN A2 sheets, drawn in 1:50 scale.
If you have any questions or suggestions, I’d be happy to discuss them!
