I’m building the original Blue Nose and the narrative instructions call for scuppers along along the waist from stem to stern. But I see on an old video of her racing and in some of the views I see sunlight shining through the scuppers. There seem to be rows scuppers only amidships, the lower foredeck and lower afterdeck and in the stern quarterdecks. I’m trying to adhere to an authentic approach and doubt she had long rows of scuppers running the full length of the ship. Does anyone know the facts about the placement of the scuppers?

WELCOME TO SoS Big :)

Are your instructions based on contemporary drawings and other contemporary evidence? Looking at contemporary based information on other schooners such as Effie M. Morrisey from the Library of Congress. she had scupper openings from just aft of the foremast to the stern. Scuppers on the schooner Columbia drawings from Eisnor show them from just aft of the foremast going to the stern as well. Of course none of this means Bluenose was the same. The posts here at SoS may be helpful as well. https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...repancies-which-is-most-accurate.11483/page-2

Thanks Allan! The diagrams in my Model Shipways kit were drafted and written by Ben Langford of Model Shipways and are dated 1996. I suppose he obtained the info from contemporary sources but it’s not specified or detailed to my knowledge. I looked at the photos in the link you graciously provided. They show small scuppers extending from around amidships back to the stern quarterdecks in a continuous line from the lowest point on the aft deck. The scuppers forward of the forward/aft decking sit lower (logical since the foredeck is lower than the aft deck). Strange that in one photo the forward line of scuppers seem to sit very low, below the waist judging from the height of the sailors standing on deck, but that may be just a matter of perception.

Hi 'BigBad'. There are mainly 3 persons who made a study of the Bluenose and made drawings: B. Langford, L.B. Jenson and P.F. Eisnor . And between them there are differents.
During my build of my Bluenose I have seen many pictures of W.R. MacAskill who made a lot of pictures of the old Bluenose. This is one of them with the scuppers in view:

Here they look small. During her operational life she has undergone 'quite a few modifications'.

On this picture with the most forward deadeye in view you don't see no scupper anymore:

They also did no run to the aft. On this picture no scupper is in view:

L.B. Jenson made a lot of drawings in his "Bluenose II, Saga of the Great Fishing Schooners". That Saga is based of the BN-II. But the BN-II is based on the original. He made also some drawing of the original but non of them shows the scuppers.
This is one of his drawings of the BN-II with the scuppers in view:

As far as I know the scuppers in the front runs till just before the fore mast.

logical since the foredeck is lower than the aft deck)
I may be misunderstanding what you mean, but I think it is other way. Further to the great photos from Peter, and as was mentioned above the water runs to the lowest portions of the deck. The below shows the water line as level and the height of the deck above the water line at the bow is higher than that of the aft portion. This is approximate as I have no high resolution plans so went with this low res drawing. The deck levels difference may be a bit different than I drew in though so this could be off a bit.

Thanks Peter! The photos are what I saw too and it kinda confirms my “suspicions “. I‘ve already started building the waist line and scuppers and it’s pretty much right on. Can’t thank you enough!

Thanks Allan and Peter! The photos of the plans corroborate my thoughts. The placement of the scuppers in the plans and photos makes perfect sense: the foredeck is lower than the aft deck so naturally the scuppers are lower on the foredeck. The plans on the Model Shipways kit call for scuppers on both sides of the bulkhead stanchions from bow to stern which would ring them all the way to the bow. I am instead placing them from amidships to about the foremast area or just beyond. You guys are right: if you strive for accuracy you have to do your homework and do research on your ship, not totally adhering to a kit’s plans. Thanks for the photos and plans and your input, they really helped.

At @BigBad : Perhaps you will find some solutions during your build in the excel-file I made:
—> BN list of Build-Logs <—See post #1, it’s direct the latest version. In column ‘E’ the hyper-links to the logs.
It’s started for the YQ build-logs but I added also the build-log of other manufacturers.
In the second part you see that there are 12 MS-BN build-logs.

PS: Perhaps start a build-log of your build? Because you want to build it accurate then it will be very interesting to follow.
Accuracy was also my aim, taking into account the design of YQ.
When you have specific questions you can post them in your log and illustrate it with photos of the specific point.
Regards, Peter

Thanks for the advice! I’m going to start a build log and incorporate photos not only of my progress but specific problems I encounter. I could share them with knowledgeable builders to learn and get insight and possible solutions. I’m fairly new to modeling, BN is my 4th build and I’m doing it to learn (as with all of them). Already learned a few hard lessons and expect many more lol.

When I see the build-log I will ad it to the BN-list.
(For sure, type somewhere @Peter Voogt in the text and it will give me a alert.)
