Serving history

I was hoping someone might know, when did the process of worming, parcelling and serving begin? My Wappen Von Hamburg plans show no serviced ropes, yet every eighteenth century vessel I’ve ever built had numerous served ropes. Again, I was hoping somebody could shed some light on the subject
