Ship Modeling

Welcome to the SOS group. Nice job on your model. My very first wooden ship model was the Danmark built from a Billings kit about fifty two years ago. The kit did not have sails and most of the fittings were brass.

Welcome to the forum. Your Danmark is beautiful!

Wow, what a coincidence! I purchased my first wooden ship model in 1978. A Billings Danmark on sale for $44.95. That was when they were selling the kits in two parts - hull kits and fittings kits. I just bought the hull kit because it was all I could afford, figuring I would pick up the fittings kit later. I did eventually get the hull planked and decked with most of the deck furniture installed, but by that time, the fittings kits were no longer available separately. It languished, surviving numerous moves - until one time it didn't. I miss that ship.

Shipping a model is a pain but not stressful, MOST of the time. Word to the wise..... I made a mistake of putting a finished schooner model in the back seat of a car we had shipped from New Jersey to Florida when we moved south. Alas, the car arrived OK, but the model was gone. I filed a complaint and was told to read the contract more closely next time, they were not responsible for missing items not attached to the car. Lived and learned, the hard way that time.

Oh no! That's terrible. It kind of makes you wonder though, is that model sitting in someone's home or office and do they even realize that it was once stolen?

Hello and welcome aboard. Your Danmark is beautiful. I will be looking forward to watching your Cutty Sark come together.

Hi gentlemen, interesting stories about moving and providing security for your models. Several years ago when I was building models commercial for a local ship yard they contracted me to deliver them to the customers in Montreal Quebec, and Dartmouth Nova Scotia. Each night during these journeys I would have to move the models into the hotel rooms with me just to make sure no one would take them. A lot of people would like to have our models, but have no interest in building their own. I was moving three of these pilot boats on that journey.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the kind words. But now I have a question regarding the 760 blocks I need for the rigging. Does anyone have some 3D files for printing?
