Having completed a number of models over the decades I
would like to share them with my children and relatives.
The problem is that most live on the other side of the continent.
What resources, materials, shipping ideas etc: are suggested
to safely ship fragile ship models?

What a wonderful idea, sharing your finished models with family is a meaningful way to pass on your work. I also give away the models I build to friends and relatives.
Shipping fragile ship models does take some planning, but it can be done safely with the right materials and method. Here are a few ideias/suggestions:
  1. Custom Crating: Build or have made a sturdy wooden crate that holds the model firmly in place. Include bracing or supports to prevent any movement during transit.
  2. Double Boxing: Place the model (secured in a smaller inner box with padding) inside a larger outer box with plenty of cushioning between the two.
  3. Shock Absorption: Use soft foam, not packing peanuts, to cradle the hull and rigging. For complex rigging, consider wrapping in acid-free tissue first, then surrounding with foam.
  4. Detach What You Can: If possible, remove masts, spars, or other delicate parts and pack them separately, clearly labeled and padded.
  5. Insure and Mark Clearly: Use a reliable shipping service, ensure the package, and clearly label it as FRAGILE – THIS SIDE UP on all sides.

There are also specialty art or model transport services, though they can be costly. Some modelers even hand-carry their builds on flights, especially for particularly delicate or valuable pieces.
