just looking at the crowd it looks like model building is alive and well in Europe such a shame there is no organization here in the states that can organize and put on such events other than this one.

We need to start one Brother

fist off you need an established organization the only one is the International Plastic Modelers Society they have club chapters all over and they are well organized. There is also the model engineering society that does shows.
Both of there organizations have 1,000s of members

the way you get started is having a booth at the Great Lakes Boat show held in Cleveland Ohio and invite the IPMS to display plastic ship models and offer the Model Engineering Society to participate. Because the show is a "boat" show the theme is model boats. Then you contact the Harold Hahn estate and ask if they would loan a model or 2 for display also ask someone like David Warther to display his ivory models.

You can ask the William Mathers museum to sponsor a booth

to do this first requires a certain amount of showmanship get the word out by riding the coat tails of already established shows and organizations willing to take part. there are also combat naval groups and R/C clubs around the area

so it can be done if the hobby was working together as one

That would be awesome. I am in a model RC plane club and one of the members here Jerry Todd is in a model RC Ship/ boat club here in Maryland I believe. I will talk with him also, He's a great guy and he may be related to me somewhere down the line as My step father was also from the Todd Family. I know there are a good number of modelers here in the US. there may be small clubs dedicated to ship Modeling here as Maryland has a ship yard and many folks from the state including my father built ships. I'd find it difficult to believe that those who build the real thing wouldn't build models as well. I father loved building Wood boat models and he even built wood cars and trucks from scratch. It would be great to see others work in person, for me traveling to Europe is not an option anymore I just have to much going on for a long trip from home. The furthest I travel these days is Canada to Bear hunt and I don't do that often anymore.

as much as 10,000 people will go through the mid America boat show here in Cleveland

years ago the Inland Seas Maritime Museum use to have a booth and sponsor a model ship contest at the show. Those were the golden years of model ships.

what the hobby lacks here in the US is an organization capable of bring together forums and clubs into one big group like the IPMS so what we have is a hobby that is fractured into small groups self absorbed into there own agendas and not for the hobby as a whole. These fractured groups are all to small to make any impact on the general public so growth of the hobby is impaired.

I would like to visit both of these but unfortunately it's a bit short notice for the Model Boats show, I'm in Northern Ireland so it means either getting a flight to Birmingham or going by Ferry (3 and a half hours) to North Wales and a 3 hour drive. I have been to the Model Engineering show in London before and it's a great show to get tools and gadgets from but I'm hoping to move into my new house in mid January so I'll be busy transporting tons of junk that I've been told we're keeping about half a mile up the road.
Here in the UK local IPMS groups and Model Railway groups often have small shows, is it worth some of you chaps in the USA contacting a local group and seeing if you could exhibit some of your builds at a local show. A model Railway group here have an annual show with 8 to 10 model Railway layouts and there are also people showing models they have built, mostly Planes and Cars, the idea is that the more things there are for people to see the more people will be attracted to go.
