A bit of history first

SS great Britain was launched from Bristol UK in 1843, had 6 masts and a massive engine and could carry up to 360 passengers, one year later it had 5 masts, in 1852 it was sold to Gibbs, Bright & Co. after it had run aground in Ireland, a major refit was done, a new engine and now had 4 masts. It now went to Australia. In 1857 another refit and a new deck was built over the main deck, this was the Spar Deck, it could now carry up to 730 passengers and HAD 3 masts, this it what I intend to build.

Spent a year trying to find out what this deck looked like, e-mails round the World with no help even from Bristol, so I decided to do my own thing.

Found a 15cm printed plan of the deck from The State Library of Victoria, original black and white photos, paintings and drawings made by passengers. I'm sure the panels along the side of the deck were hinged shutters of various sizes to let in air and light, the photos show this. The rear and forward ends are my imagination!

So next, work on the interior and the Spar deck fittings.
