Ok I finally bit the bullet and started the ship building hobby. ( like I need another).
Modelexpo’s phantom New York pilot boat 1868.
Solid wood hull(not a beginner’s kit)
Lots of carving and not very detailed plans. Not much online (video) or pictures to show details of carving the deck or bulwarks. Hopefully I figured it out correctly. IMG_6858.jpegIMG_6857.jpegIMG_6856.jpeg

This was my first kit many moons ago, I did get some thin veneer planking for the hull instead of just painting it.

It did take lots of time to shape the hull per the patterns but once you get started and figure out the steps they go easier as you move along the hull.

Sand a little and fit templates often.

I was able to print Chuck Passaro's practicum on this kit, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore except for members of Model Ship World. It's pretty helpful if you can find a copy. Unfortunately, i only seem to have printed it, rather than downloaded it.

Now is the time to start to consider your finished look.

If you plan to stain or paint the deck structures or seal or varnish the deck, and what effects each action has on things like glue working to attach parts, or some glues preventing a stain from getting into the wood, CA is bad about this as it seals the pours.

Construction wise, the ship is looking great, just don't get ahead of yourself in building, consider the end product.

Thank you for the advice
I’m not attaching anything just yet, just getting everything (LOTS of research)I can/want to build done first. Tapering the masts and bow sprint, and a few rigging
what-nots. I have the handrails and cockpit soaked and drying into shape tonight. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Another decision that I Recommend making now is how you plan to display your finished model. The usual method is brass pedestals fixed with screws passing through the base board, pedestal, keel, and into the hull. Any other method will also involve drilling into the hull. This is best done now before the hull is painted, and especially before you begin rigging.

BTW, I do not recall Phantom having heavily raked masts.

Thank you for the display recommendations, I haven’t thought that far ahead.
The mast are not mounted yet, just sitting in the drilled hole. From what I’ve found they are at roughly a 7 degree angle from parallel. I hope that’s correct.
