I was looking for a small interim project when I saw another member on SOS post his model of Stephenson’s Rocket by Occre. The kit was inexpensive and looked interesting.
It was easy to build. The materials and instructions were quite good. I was also able to get a case that fit from Amazon for $36!
This was the first practical locomotive, built in England in 1829. It was the basis for all the steam locomotives that followed.
I usually include crew figures on ships to show the scale. In this case they were included to illustrate how small this locomotive was. It only weighed 4 tons. I don’t know how the engineer and fireman managed to work in so small a space. I also don’t know how water got from the large barrel on the tender to the boiler. If anyone knows, please tell me.
Illustrations I found showed crew wearing stovepipe hats, but I don’t think working men in that era wore them.
