I am wondering if anyone might have information on the ship Snow Molly or information about this painting that has been on several genealogy sites. I am interested in an information since this was the ship that my ancestors traveled from Germany to the US in 1737. I just getting into wooden ship building, currently working on the Occree Bucaneer, but have been a scale model builder for many years. If there is enough information, I would love to try to build a replica of the ship once my skills are better.
The Snow Molly was Captained by John Howell, Master, from Amsterdam. but last from Dover.Screenshot 2025-08-29 163847.png

Hi Thartline
Based on your screen name I am guessing your ancestors are Hans Michael Hartlyn and Micael Hartlyn. There are fifteen contemporary plans of snows and snow rigged sloops on the RMG Collections site. An example below is the inboard profile and body plan (drawing ZAZ5033) of a snow dated 1744, a few years after Molly. There are also plans of Spy, Bonetta. and Merlin snow rigged sloops (ZAZ4638) and others. They all seem to be the normal snow two masted design so there may be some doubts as to the authenticty of the painting by the unknown artist. Personally I would trust the contemporary plans more than the painting but that may just be me. You can also contact RMG to ask if they have anything more helpful. Also, you might want to check with the National Archives in Kew and ask if they have any contracts or other information that would be useful.

Yes, our name has undergone many different iterations over the years, but the same pronunciation. Thanks for the references. I figure I have a long ways to go before having the skills to build a ship model from scratch, just from plans. But it is a goal.
My challenge is going to be balancing the wooden ship model building with my plastic scale models. I was a helicopter pilot in the navy for 28 years, so I have several models I want to build of the helos I flew and the ships I served on.
Here is one I built of the aft end of the USS Detroit.

I STRONGLY suggest you start with something relative easy and accurate. The best many members have seen is the three boat series originally designed by noted model builder and author David Antscherl and available from Model Shipways.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your service. Our youngest flew Blackhawks for the Army for 22 years before retiring and I was able to go aboard one when he was stationed at Ft. Bragg. I was overwhelmed with the complexity. If you can fly (and land) a helicopter you can scratch build a model ship. Heck, if you can hover a helicopter you can do near anything you set your mind to.
