Surely this is an error in the instructions--Armed Virginia Sloop by Model Shipways

Howdy from Texas folks! First time poster here, but not my first dance with wooden ship models.

I’m hoping someone who has purchased a RECENT kit of the Armed Virginia Sloop by Model Shipways can help me out.
The instructions--and sheet 2--clearly state the wale should be made with 1/16” x 3/16” walnut (I’m obviously referring to the outer planking here.) However, in the April 2020 revision of the Parts List for the kit, it states in the notes section the wale should now be made with 1/8” x 1/4 walnut and two strips are specifically supplied for this purpose.

These 1/8” x 1/4” planks seem WAY too thick and out of proportion even for the wale. I’m afraid they’ll stick out like a sore thumb. I’ve attached some picts for reference.

Does this seem right to anyone else?

I built the Virginia years ago ,take a look in my signature are,I will aso check my old plans and instruvtions my kit is from 2005

at the end, most important is the comparison of the thickness with the second planking!
Are these normal planks also thicker?

The issue is in relationships. In model ship building the most important lesson is relationships override dimensions. In this case, as posted above, what is the relationship of the thickness of the Wales to the thickness of the final planking?

Use the smaller dimension. Also, the wales were just a thicker piece of planking. The wales were NOT applied over another piece of planking; using this technique is an obvious error. The dimensions of wales varied all oveer the lot. There was no rule for their size. The boat builder determined the dimensione he thought were required for his design. Regarding the AVS - the AVS is a generic concept; it is like saying 'a car'. 'Anything could be used' as an AVS. The AVS could be a rowboat , a three master, a sloop, a catboat, or who knows.

1/8 X 1/4 would be correct proportion if laid directly to the frames. Appears to late for that now . I would now go for the smaller piece.

The cross section picture you posted shows a double layer of a strip for the wale. Twice 1/16 is 1/8. So I'm thinking the old method would be to double up the 1/16 strips but now being a wonderful new age they supply you with a 1/8 strip just for the wales. Maybe?

I do not think this - for me it is looking in the section drawing like one layer of the first planking and one layer of the second planking.
