Several flush deck 1780-1800 British brig-sloops had fairly tall bulwarks and, in addition to their cannon, swivel guns. We are not talking Sultana here, we are talking serious protection. HMS Speedy had a flush deck and five foot plus walls surrounding the brig; no decks flush with the side rails.
Does anyone know how the sailors got high enough to load, aim and ignite these cannon?
And what if hammocks were up -- would there be empty space for the swivels or the swivels on tall rods shooting above the hammocks (in which case where did sailors stand)?
TYVM!
