Tapering a 200mm dowel for my model's bowspirit was easier than I originally thought. I mount the dowel in a collet and a live center. The part is 5mm diameter at one end and tapered to 4mm at the other end. Then I found if I turn a notch that is the same diameter I am tapering to, it gives me a reference and target to sand to. Works very well.
