I believe the kit is single planked in walnut. Some builders of this kit purchase limewood for the first planking and use the supplied walnut for the second planking.
You would be better placed to build this model with 2 layers of planking.
 
I think you need to carve down the bow blocks to profile the stem of the model. Then the planking is veneered over the top of the blocks.
