The Ocean going rescue tug, HMT Rollcall W81 1920, Built using Caldercraft's Resolve grp hull and plans (much modified).

I have been uneasy about my interpatation of the BST plan of Rollcall showing, what I thought was, a davit support on the wash deck, and the more I thought about it the more I felt I had got it wrong. I now feel, (certian), it is a base for a samson post, both port and starboard which makes far more sense as placed there it would protect the rigging from the tow rope ripping throughit if the tug is 'girted' ie heals and turns so that the tow slides towards the beam I think. I really need to read more about tug handling.
No matter it was lucky that I attched these bits using pva so they are already pulled off and it is time to go again.

As Osgood Fielding III, (Joe E Brown), tells Jerry, (Jack Lemmon), at the end of 'Some Like it Hot',
Well, nobody's perfect!

Better get on with it, JJ..

Well, nobody's perfect!
True story Jack but your modelling is pretty close. It looks grand.
so England better look out for Norway!
Another true story Jack, especially after they got a hiding by the Boks on Sunday and no British Silverstone winner. The little Island will be mighty depressed if they loose to Norway ROTF .
Cheers Grant

Cheers Grant, mind you Ireland did good against the Aus. under the lights at the Aviva.Thumbs-Up

Good evening,
Juat about finished all the deck fittings, the last being four crates on wheels that are to represent two portable salvage pumps and their gear. They don't look like much and I might dump them. I had the bright idea of stenciling on some i.d., but that does not look right so I will give it the bye ball. The towing bows were very difficult to get exactly right but look acceptable. Still a bit to do with the rigging then one final layer of detail and painting after that a decision on how to finish the hull. When I started this build I recond to have it done and dusted by August so still well on target.

Good morning Jack. As you know I'm a fan of your finishes - yet again another realistic look achieved. Eish....Argentina sent our lads packing last night....Cheers Grant

I could have written the script Grant. England knew they where beat the second they scored. Happy to sit back and wait for the onslaught.
In fact when they went 1-0 I had a small wager on Argentina.

Cheers JJ..

Just about reached the finish line so it might seem a strange time to take a break but I have a whole host of other things I want to do. I think mentally I have moved on already and consequentially I have found myself rushing and not doing this old girl justice. So I will leave her for a bit and concentrate on preparing to build a long time goal, the 1906 battleship HMS Agamemanon.

I know that feeling, Jack. Sometimes you have to take a brake to refill your energy level. Till now you have reached a high level with the build of this model with those details and weathering. And always nice to see a new build-log coming soon.
Regards, Peter

My sentiments exactly Peter, although, apart from a stand, there is not much to do my heart is just not in it. The rigging turned out OK or at least better than I expected.

Thanks JJ..

A question of scale
and things that would make you mad!
After a wee break I have come back to finish Rollcall. In particular a suitable stand which is now well under way. While waiting for the paint to dry I have been adding bits and pieces of detail. One piece I thought would be fun to build and show was an oyy acetylene cutting rig to add to the little workshop. So looking around I spotted that Mini Art made a garage workshop set in 1/48 scale. I bought the kit for a few quid and made up one of the bottle sets. Take a look see.

First here are some bottles pictured in the 1920's.

Now here is the little guy I use for judging 1./48 scale shown at the work bench the bottles behind him are the same size as the ones on the trolly 1/48? and the other pic is of him with the bottles on a trolly. The little guy scales up to 5 foot 8 inches while the big guy is in 1/35 scale and scales to near 6 feet. Dont think I will be looking for many more Mini Art kits.

P.S. I suppose I could use the bottles as torpedoes just like Bogie did.

Stand should be finished by the weekend. JJ..

Also here it’s obvious: ‘Size does matter!’

All good things, and even some not so good, come to an end. I am pleased to say that, having added a proper stand, HMT Rollcall is now complete. Strangly having come back after a few weeks away I feel happier with the finish, not what I envisaged at the start but OK. in the end.
