At my latest meeting of our ship club, The Square Riggers, an interesting piece of information came up and then discussed a little. One member mentioned that he had a shaky hand condition but when he started building wooden ships his concentration was so focused that over time, during each session, the tremors started disappearing. His belief was that the brain was gradually rewiring itself. Another member in our group also had the same experience and with the type of modeling he accomplishes he had to have a steady hand. I would like to hear comments from the membership if you have experienced this phenomenon or other advantageous health outcomes other than lower blood pressure or calming effects.

I've seen it with golfers. Shaking hands when placing the ball on a tee or when addressing the ball, but steady with the back swing and forward swing.

I used to have trouble using my left hand. I couldn't do any activities with my left hand and fingers. Now, since I started model making, I can use my left hand and fingers very well. Also, I become calmer and more patient when I start working on a model.

I find it helpful to cut back on caffeine and that magnesium supplements really help reduce shaking. Concentrating on something you enjoy such as modeling, may also be helpful!

I also notice that after modeling for some time my shaky hands seem to be improving. I’m gonna try a magnesium supplement. I also notice that with a third cup of coffee it was much worse so I’ve cut back. Maybe that’s why my tremors have improved.

A friend of mine had very bad hand tremors. He found a highly specialized program at the University of West Virginia that uses ultrasonics directed at areas of the brain to treat them. The process was also highlighted in an article of the Wall Street Journal. It required three trips to Morgantown, WV; one for evaluation, and two for treatment. The treatment was effective.

An interesting point indeed. My fingers tremble shake a bit, but never while modeling. Ive thought about it but didnt link it to the brains role in concentration while on the build. Thanks Im going to put this before a friend who is a neuro doc.
