Threads

Reading the posts about cotton vs polyester threads and the mention of Serafil thread. Is there a chart or listing of thread sizes for different scale models? I am building @1:90 scale and am interested in getting the best thread for rigging. And does anyone recommend colors or do you buy white and dye your own?

I researched Amann and came across Serafil, I then found what sizes/colours were available in Australia and ordered from an importer here. You will probably have more access to colours/sizes than here. I found size 120 using 3 threads in a ropewalk produces a seizing size rope. You can then multiply from there. I then also have size 60, which I make rigging rope from 3 threads. From there, you can do the calculations as to what you need. I would recommend size 120 in black/dark brown, 120 in beige (for seizing and other small rigging) 60 in beige (for running rigging), 40 in black/dark brown (for standing rigging), it's up to you. This is the one thing in all of the Rattlesnake plans that are in fact good. On one page there is a conversion chart for the size of ropes on the actual ship and what size thread to use on the model. This can be applied to any and all model ships in the 1/64 scale. I'm keeping this page and burning the rest.
