I found this book recommended by the Mariner's Mirror. For anyone interested in clipper ships in particular, and sea voyages in the 19th century it looks to be a very good read
A synopsis:
The 19-year-old woman who commanded a clipper ship is Mary Ann Brown Patten (1837–1861). She is the subject of the 2026 non-fiction book To the Edge of the World by Tilar J. Mazzeo (also published as The Sea Captain's Wife), which recounts her true,, harrowing journey in 1856.

Key Details of Her Story:
  • The Vessel & Voyage: In 1856, at age 19 and eight months pregnant, Mary Ann was aboard the American clipper ship Neptune's Car, traveling from New York to San Francisco around the treacherous Cape Horn.
  • The Crisis: Her husband, Captain Joshua Patten, fell gravely ill with tuberculosis (becoming blind, deaf, and delirious), forcing her to take command of the vessel.
  • Leadership under Pressure: For 56 days, she navigated the ship through dangerous storms, managed a crew skeptical of a woman in command, and quelled an attempted mutiny by the first mate.
  • Success: She successfully guided Neptune's Car into San Francisco, beating rival ships and saving the vessel and its valuable cargo.
  • Legacy: Mary Ann Patten is recognized as the first woman to command an American merchant vessel. She died of tuberculosis at age 23, shortly after her husband passed away.
