Tools and Jigs

Hi Frank, welcome to the best ship site on earth. You'll find tons of great info on ship modelling in the build logs. The guys who log show and tell how they do each step, it's the most invaluable tool you can get.

https://modelexpo-online.com/ has an ok selection of tools to get started with, but Ebay is also your friend, usually lower prices and Model Expo sells there too.

Now I'll let the guys more advanced and more knollagable than me chime in, they'll fix you right up :)
Thanks...

Hello Frankie, and welcome aboard SOS!! We have dedicated threads made specifically, as they have been asked oftentimes.

Enjoy! But rest assured, if you need additional advice, we are here to help!
Hi Jim,

Thanks for the input.

Just want you to know the link you gave me brings me to a page that says I am not authorized to view.

I have learned that hands-on is better than trusting catalogs. This hobby like many others becomes addictive in the search for that next better tool. It can drain a bank roll quickly if you/I am not careful.. Too many times what I ordered was not what I was expecting so asking around SoS is a good launch. PT-2
Great advice...thanks.

Yes, we found that that link works only for admins (for now), it is in testing mode, thought. Will definitely fix it.

Try LauckStreetShipyard.com for videos and practicums that walk you through the modeling process step by step, including discussions on tools, glues, and finishes. Great resource. Tools and gadgets are fun to fuss with but the basics include xacto knives, a Drexel tool, several shaped diamond files, and something to drill very small holes (either the Drexel tool or a hand drill). I know a master modeler who uses a no.11 XActo blade for most of his shaping. Having said this, collecting tools and gadgets can be a hobby in itself. I have dozens of tools and gadgets that I picked up and maybe used once or twice but are now just sitting in the tool box. I find my favorites that are at hand and once in a while pick up a specialty tool. No regrets...just fun to try them out.

Yes, as a carpenter / cabinetmaker, I was THE tool guy. Some I used a lot, others not so much or maybe once. Today, I do lots of things the "old" way, with hand tools, that the younger guys can't (or won't) do unless there is a power tool for it. Example - nail guns.

When I took up model building after a 50 year hiatus, it opened up a whole new world of tools to collect that I never knew existed, for "miniature" work. I'm lovin it.

Tools.... The bane of my existence. SMH...

My father used to say: I am not that wealthy to buy cheap tools. He was indeed right.
This reminds me....
The saying goes: "Why is there never enough time to do a job right...But ALWAYS enough time to do a job over.??!!

AND of course the corollary: Why is there not enough money to buy a good tool, but always enough money to buy a replacement tool.???
:eek::oops:

The priority for most modelers should be to acquire documentation before tools. Quality and relevant books / documentation on the subject or era of your choice will not build your models but they will sure help along the way: and I do not just mean "modeling help" books. Put some emphasis on your education as a ship modeler: learn about ships, history, etc... you may find interest in stuff you would not expect.
Tools will of course not build you ship either and do you really need the fancy equipment in the first place.
Tools I find indispensable: good hand saws and other small things such a straight cutting nail-clipper, good quality cloth-pegs (the old stuff), mini files, etc...
It is amazing what you can do with hand tools: just try...
These days you can purchase milled wood quite readily and you will get a lot of wood for the price of that fancy milling machine or miniature table saw you may purchase.... and you would still need to buy the wood afterwards anyways...
As far as jigs are concerned, you will never be better served but by your own solutions.
