For anyone interested, especially those somewhat local to Portsmouth, the following may be interesting. The article has a one minute video as well that brings Nelson to life.

Marking two major milestones, the 220th anniversary of Trafalgar and the 35th of The 1805 Club's foundation, this conference brings together leading naval historians -- including two winners of the Hattendorf Prize -- at a venue directly opposite HMS Victory. ___During the chairmanship of the late Peter Warwick, The 1805 Club established a good international reputation for organising and promoting a series of successful naval historical conferences. Sadly, Peter died from a series of cancers in 2019, and the conferences fell into abeyance. Run by volunteers, The 1805 Club is a small but energetic naval historical charity, well-connected, effective and influential beyond its size. The Club has members in 23 nations and continues to excel in its conservation and commemoration projects, publications, and events. But we have been missing the added fun and stimulus of our conferences. We have therefore been working towards a new series, starting on Friday 24 October 2025. Our focus is ‘Naval matters of the Georgian era (1714-1837) and their influence since then’, which members of The 1805 Club will recognise as ‘what we do’. We also feel free to interpret the focus quite loosely. In this conference we present speakers from the ‘Royalty’ of naval non-fiction to its exciting ‘Nouvelles’. Naturally we have great confidence in all our speakers as experienced researchers and writers eager to share their latest knowledge. But we do feel some special pleasure in presenting to you not just one, but two winners of the Hattendorf Prize for Distinguished Original Research in Maritime History. Reservations may be requested via the Club Secretary on secretary@1805club.org, with the subject line CONF2025. Members and Friends may bring guests. The charge per person, including lunch, is £75.00 sterling/US$100.00. |
