Folks, I have just seen an advert for a magazine called “Model Boats” but it looks like it covers many aspects of model boats like RC models and the like. Unfortunately I am not into RC models and was wondering if that mag would be suitable for me who at the moment only would wish to read about our hobby. Apologies to those of you who love RC and any other model boats

Hi Dennis

You are correct in that the magazines main focus is RC. They do feature static ships occasionally. I do both static and RC but only occasionally buy the magazine only if a particular article takes my interest

Overall the magazine relies on contributors and it is obvious the content is suffering a little as the number of people interested in the hobby is on the decline, at least in the UK.

Hi Nigel, Thanks for a super fast response. So my assumptions look to be correct, therefore I will have to give the mag a miss ( sorry Model Boats ).
At least I can still get my fix from the fabulous contributors to this forum.

It’s nice to belong to a forum devoid of trolls and the like. I used to belong to a few car forums but I didn’t last long as there were some nasty people on them and I left.

Trolls seem to be endemic on UK forums, in my own experience.
A sad reflection on our culture, not entirely overwhelming, but indicative of today's 'lad culture' which is boorish, immature and part of what has become 'Broken Britain'.
Seemingly driven by drug and alcohol abuse.

I wrote occasionally for Model Boats, with my ship models, and they were quite popular. The Bellmore was my last article. I built an equal number of steamers, but only merchant ships that are not modeled very often. Very few tools required.

Hello Robert,
I have two of your models here and can vouch for the quality of your builds.
Did you ever do a Shell ‘H’ class tanker?
The models docked here are the Earl Granville and the Lothair.
I hope all is well with your good self.
Best regards
Mike

Hello Mike,
I never did a Shell tanker. The problem with tankers was that the plans did not always show the pipework on deck. I remember making the Earl Granville and Lothair, and a friend collecting them for you. I am pretty "washed up" now, at the age of 81, and no longer build models due to several health issues, including allergic to dust and glue fumes, and eyesight problems, but I am now drawing them instead.
Robert

Dennis, you are absolutely right about a decline in the number of people in the UK building static display models. We in the Society of Model Shipwrights still do so but we are experiencing a gradual shift from age of sail to steel and steam. If you want to get in touch go to our website: <modelshipwrights.org>. We are an international club now and we find that there is much greater interest in the USA and Canada than in this Country. Both sides of the Atlantic meet twice a month on a Zoom meeting to discuss research and the models we are making. We back this up with a monthly news letter distributed electronically.
Ian.

Many thanks for the reply Robert, same here with medical issues - since I retired ten years ago the NHS have got their hooks into me and won’t let me go although I’m very grateful for the expert service I have received in the Glasgow area.
Hospital appointments gives me the excuse to visit the Glenlee and wander around the transport museum and their ship builders model collection although I think they could be displayed a little better, I always wonder what lay behind closed doors in storage.
Take care.
Brgds. Mike.
