The U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard in San Diego is listing because of water from the fire hoses, tugboats and helicopters fighting the inferno, which has destroyed the ship’s forward mast.

Just pulled this kit off the shelf. Different name, but it is the same class ship as the Bonhomme Richard.

USS Wasp is the first ship in this class (LHD-1)... The Bonhomme Richard is the 6th (LHD-6)

The ship's flight deck and superstructure were damaged by the fire, which caused the forward mast to collapse. Sobeck said on Monday there had been fire damage all the way through to the ship's skin.
Images posted on social media show heavy damage to the ship as well.

This class of ships are certainly aircraft carriers, maybe not super carriers, but they pack a serious aerial punch with embarked Marine VSTOLS and various helicopters, including the potent Cobra attack helos. The class is larger and heavier than most foreign carriers and would certainly defeat them in a stand up sea battle. GO NAVY!

These situations defy explanation. Certainly, a ship undergoing maintenance while docked will be at most risk. No crew (or almost none..), at night, so workers are not present (necessarily..). Normal "fire watch" protocols are significantly reduced or absent. Watertight doors are blocked open because of maintenance hoses, lines penetrating throughout the ship.
There simply MUST be a better way.!

Well maybe in the movies, but not in real life. This ship is a heavy amphibious assualt ship. It's mission is to support the invasion of land masses by the US Marine Corp. It is not really designed for fighting sea battles. She carries over 2,000 combat Marines, helicopters, VSTOL aircraft, hovercraft, landing craft, tanks and armoured vehicles. The interior is a giant hanger and can be partially flooded to allow egress of the landing craft and hovercraft out the rear. Unlike aircraft carriers, she has no catapults, arresting gear and cannot handle traditional fixed wing aircraft. The reason she was in port - was to be refitted to carry the new F-35 aircraft to replace the aging AV-8 Harrier. She may look like an aircraft carrier, in general appearance, but she is far from it in both design and mission.
