Hello
I am looking to purchase Vanguard's Sherbourne model but never worked with MDF. I believe it is more stable and not prone to warping but is there any drawbacks such as sanding, shaping, glueing and painting MDF?

Thanks for you all recommendations

Hi,
Welcome to our community. I hope you feel right at home.
Unfortunately, my kit doesn't include MDF parts, but you'll find plenty of experienced members here on the forum.
Looking forward to seeing your build

The cartoon rowboat looks like my first attempt at building a wooden model ship. Wonky, lots of gaps and with a slight twist.

Thank you for the welcome.

Welcome!

I just completed the Vanguard Sherbourne and I can tell you the MDF was not a drawback. Chris Watton has designed an outstanding model and I found all the materials top notch and easy to work with. He designed a kit that encapsulates all that wood in pear and other nicer woods.

Thank you for the information. Are you in the USCG? I just retired from the USCG

Hi LB, Generally speaking MDF is very hard and stable (bent many a pin). Never had issues sanding, shaping, glueing or painting as MDF takes to it well. Vanguard models are designed and built by Chris Watton so you know it will be a an excellent quality kit with decent materials. HM Cutter Sherbourne was my very first kit to dip my toes into wooden model ship building, that was 15 years ago, makes me go all misty eyed and nostaligic!
